1. Compare funding sources

SourceStrengthTrade-off
Bootstrapping / revenueControl and disciplineCan grow slower
Friends/familyTrust and speedRelationship risk
GrantOften non-dilutiveEligibility/reporting constraints
AngelCapital + experienceEquity dilution
VCLarger growth capitalHigh growth expectations and dilution
DebtKeeps equityRepayment and cash-flow risk
CrowdfundingMarket validation + capitalCampaign effort and platform rules

2. Pre-seed versus seed

Labels vary by market. Pre-seed often funds initial validation and product creation; seed rounds more often fund evidence that a product can grow. Focus less on the label and more on what evidence exists and which milestone the round is meant to finance.

3. Calculate runway

Simple runway modeltext
monthly burn = monthly operating expenses - monthly gross cash inflow
runway months = available cash / monthly burn

Example:
10,000,000 FCFA cash / 1,000,000 FCFA monthly burn = 10 months

Real cash-flow planning needs more detail: irregular payments, taxes, annual software, hardware, hiring timing, receivables and currency changes. A simple model is a starting point, not the finance system.

4. Build the pitch deck around evidence

  • ✓Problem.
  • ✓Specific customer.
  • ✓Product / demo.
  • ✓Why now.
  • ✓Market.
  • ✓Traction.
  • ✓Business model.
  • ✓Competition and alternatives.
  • ✓Go-to-market.
  • ✓Team.
  • ✓Financial assumptions.
  • ✓Amount raised + use of funds.

5. Understand dilution

Selling equity means existing owners hold a smaller percentage afterward. Do not evaluate a term only by headline valuation. Rights, preferences, board terms, option pools and future rounds can materially affect founders and early employees.

6. Diligence readiness

AreaPrepare
CorporateRegistration, cap table, shareholder records
FinanceBank records, revenue, expenses, forecasts
ProductArchitecture, roadmap, major dependencies
LegalContracts, IP assignments, privacy/terms
MetricsDefinitions that can be reproduced from source data

7. After the money arrives

  1. 1
    Translate round into milestones

Hiring and spending should connect to measurable outcomes.

  2. 2
    Track runway monthly

Know whether reality matches the model.

  3. 3
    Communicate

    Send concise, honest investor updates.

  4. 4
    Protect focus

Funding is a means to build the company, not the company itself.
