How to Get Better at Programming: A Practical Practice System
Programming improves through deliberate struggle, daily learning, reflection, projects, mentors and patience — not by memorising more syntax.
1. Measure practice by output, not videos watched
| Activity | Evidence you learned |
|---|---|
| Tutorial | You can rebuild the core idea without it |
| Documentation | You used one API correctly in a project |
| Bug fixing | You can explain root cause and prevention |
| Code review | You changed a habit after feedback |
| Project | Someone else can run it |
2. Use deliberate practice
Choose tasks slightly above your comfort zone: a feature you do not immediately know how to build, a bug with several possible causes, or a refactor that forces you to understand existing code. If every exercise is easy, you are rehearsing rather than expanding skill.
3. Example: debug before searching
const scores = [10, 12, 18];
let total;
for (const score of scores) {
total += score;
}
console.log(total / scores.length);Before searching, inspect total. It starts as undefined, so undefined + 10 becomes NaN. The fix is not mysterious: initialise total to 0. The useful lesson is the debugging method—observe the first incorrect value, not only the final symptom.
4. Keep a bug diary
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Symptom | API returned 401 after refresh |
| Root cause | Token existed only in component memory |
| Fix | Restore authenticated session before protected request |
| Prevention | Add refresh-session integration test |
5. Read code every week
- 1Pick one small file
Avoid starting with a 10,000-file framework.
- 2Predict
Before running it, say what you think each function does.
- 3Trace
Follow one data value through the file.
- 4Change
Make one safe modification.
- 5Compare
Read tests or commit history to understand intent.
6. Refactor your old project
- ✓Rename unclear variables.
- ✓Extract repeated logic.
- ✓Remove dead code.
- ✓Add input validation.
- ✓Improve loading/error/empty states.
- ✓Add one automated test around a previous bug.
- ✓Update the README with architecture and trade-offs.
7. Weekly practice template
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Mon | 30–60 min fundamentals |
| Tue | Feature in current project |
| Wed | Debugging kata or bug diary |
| Thu | Read another developer’s code |
| Fri | Feature + tests |
| Sat | Deploy/refactor/document |
| Sun | Review what was confusing and choose next target |
8. Get feedback before habits harden
Mentorship can be one person, a code-review group, a developer community or a teammate. Ask precise questions: Is this function doing too much? Is this API error handling safe? What would you simplify? Specific questions get specific feedback.
